Man Quits Instagram, Reads 3,764 Books in a Year

I made that headline up. I’m experimenting with clickbait. The sentiment of quitting things is worthwhile. Lemme break it down for you. I’m not big on new year’s resolutions, because I’m a do-a-thing-or-don’t kind of guy. There’s no real barrier to me growing a beard in July, or shaving my tongue for Lent. If I want to lose 30 pounds, all that’s between me and that goal is a shopping list and a fear of losing the taste for cake. However! I do find the end-of-year vacation, colloquially known as “Christmas Break” to the locals in my town, valuable. I mean, yeah, we all swing in hammocks, which is a goal in itself. But without other activities like working for a living, I’m able to reflect. Where did my time go? What do I want to use my remaining time on? Read More …

Tyche Origins

Contrary to popular belief, I haven’t been spending my last few weeks surfing the web or playing video games. Tyche Origins is coming soon! This five-novella series are tiny vignettes into the backgrounds of the Tyche’s crew. How they came to the ship. How they left their homes. The stories are easy to read in a sitting, and are 15,000+ words of action and dialogue* each. The stories will be out soon. Until then, enjoy the covers. * NSFW

L’Oreal: Titans of Tech

No, I’m serious. It seems our friends over L’Oreal have made something that could help you make sensible choices about your crispness levels courtesy of the ball of fire in Earth’s skies. “UV Sense is a battery-free electronic sensor that’s designed to monitor your sun exposure and, with the help of an NFC-enabled smartphone, help limit your skin cancer risk.“ Stick it on your nail, tap it with your phone, and viola, you know how many solar rads you’ve had. In New Zealand we feel the ozone depletion, so this rocks for us. Source: https://www.engadget.com/2018/01/07/l-oreal-and-john-rogers-built-a-thumbnail-sized-uv-sensor/

Where I Talk About the Reader Survey

The people have spoken. Below you’ll find a tear down of of my December 2017 Reader Survey. I’m sharing this back out because: Respondents might dig knowing what everyone else said; I’ve got a bunch of author friends who will find some of this pure gold; and It’s fucking cool. The usual disclaimers apply. Self-reported results are notoriously iffy, and the sample size is limited. Also, I’ve got a huge amount of unconscious bias which will be evident in how I parse this stuff. Let’s see how sub-par my brain is, hey? Ruling the World Why start small? I want to write more books in my latest Tyche story universe, because a) I enjoy it a great deal and b) readers seem to as well. This is what biz people call win-win. First up? What to call the universe. I rejected about Read More …

Pew! Pew!

I was invited to participate in Pew! Pew! 4: Bad versus Worse. This is a level of awesome I hadn’t anticipated. Pew! is a humorous anthology series where the greats of indie sci-fi (everyone else on the cover except me) rub shoulders with the newbies (me). You can get it here: https://www.books2read.com/Consensus This volume is a 50/50 mix of heroes and villains. My story, Consensus, is about a huge asshole named Austin (that’s not why he’s an asshole) who goes on a not-quite-heroes journey to start a new megacorp. I would dig it if you could check it out and let me know what you think  Blurb for Consensus: Decisions shouldn’t be hard. As a lead researcher for Reed Interactive, Austin Ainley created The Decider. It’s tech that can nudge people towards making the right choices. Despite his brilliance, Reed threw Read More …
