The Other White Bread

Apparently some people prefer to get their entertainment, not from books, but from other… things.

In order to help you in your quest (if you’re one of these types), may I present a couple of things that might not have hit your radar.

Saga

If you’d told me — just a couple days ago — that I’d be mad sick all over a comic series about a chick with faery wings and a dude with devil horns who get together and have a love child, traversing the stars in a rocket ship that’s a tree, I’d have hit you upside the head again and again until the stupid came out.  Turns out, that’s exactly what Saga is, and it’s — very possibly — the best graphic series I’ve read.  The art work by Fiona Staples (@) is on fire, very much like Greg Land’s work, and the story by Brian K. Vaughan (FB) is… well, I’m going to be honest and say it makes me sick that that man has so much talent.  I’m pretty much fucked as a writer with dudes like him holding a pen.

I picked it up, amongst the second on this list (Lazarus) in the Humble Image Comics Bundle.  Because it’s awesome, I went out and coined up volume three from Amazon right away…  Here are the links you need: 1 | 2 | 3.

Lazarus

This one’s an easier sell for someone like me.  Distopian future.  Warriors with swords and pistols.  Families at war.

And, among the endless conflict, two soldiers who share a drink at sunset.  These warriors can’t die, not easily – they are their family’s Lazarus, warriors that span death, but struggle all the more with mortality and morality.

If any of what I just wrote sounded good to you, you’ll want to get yourself a copy of Lazarus, written by Greg Rucka and illustrated by Michael Lark.  The art is good.  The story is good.  My only complaint was that volume 2 isn’t out for a couple of months, so I don’t have someone to throw my money at just yet.

Child of Light

And now, for something completely different: a video game that’s about a storybook princess who falls into a mystery realm of fables.  All the lines are delivered in rhyme.

Yeah, I almost didn’t bother downloading Child of Light either.  I mean, really?  A hero who’s a child.  The pain and agony of continuously rhyming verse.  Cutsey characters who don’t use belt-fed weapons.  But no, turns out it’s really good — peaceful to play, great soundtrack, and I get to embrace my inner five-year-old girl.  Grab the demo, you won’t be disappointed.  I’m cranking through it as time allows on PlayStation 4, but I don’t think it’s the kind of game that cares what your platform alliance is to: it just wants you to get lost in adventuring in a storybook world.  I think it’s available for anything that takes electricity?  Probably.
