Words and me, yo.
I’m cranking hard on NaNo at the moment, and having a blast. I’m trying to hit 2,000 words a day, and – mostly – making it. The little ticker on the right there shows my progress, if that’s the kind of thing you like. My writing buddies are along at various states with me, with a particular Dark Horse keeping pace well indeed.
What’s been awesome is getting into the people. Each day feels better than the last, and I’m at the point where stopping mid-flow is hard. I’m getting to know Mason, Sadie, Harry, and Laia, and the story they have to tell. The writing of it is amazing fun, and I don’t think I hit this kind of Writer’s Euphoria™ until much later on in Night’s Favour. It’s a blast, and in many ways I wish I had the kind of flexibility to really crank out 3,000 or 3,500 words a day again (sadly, the day job with the G-Men, life, and all that stuff).
Upgrade is that it’s the story I wanted to have the skill to write when I was learning the craft. I don’t know if I’ve got that skill yet to do Mason justice, but the words keep coming and the story is starting to tell itself (this gives me a little hope). I can’t wait to show you my work when it’s done, about a man who’s managed to get everything in life exchange for his soul, and how he goes about saving a girl and her dying world – and maybe getting his humanity back.
Whilst that may sound kinda cool, the story may also change before it’s done. That’s the way of these things: they really need to speak their own words.

You’re totally cranking with Nano! It’s an awesome feeling isn’t it?
It’s interesting how you’re feeling about your book at the moment. I think it’s partly writing it, and partly the adrenaline you’re getting from the commitment you’ve made to cranking out 50k during November.
I’m about to start my writing for the day now, and hoping to add on another 2k or so. I know that I should probably be writing about 3k a day to complete this novel in November, but we’ll see.

I like your thinking on why it feels good – both the writing of it, and “the pump” (to use an Arnie saying, if you’ll forgive the conceit).
Today’s writing was pretty good, but slower than yesterday – will be doing more this evening. Slower, because I was writing action today; that requires less writing and more use of pen and paper to locate where dudes are in the physical space.
Also, whether you say “railgun,” “Gauss rifle,” or “coilgun.” Decisions, decisions.
