I can’t make myself do it.
The Holstee Manifesto |
See, I was considering a palette cleanser of sorts, a short story or novella. I’ve got a set of character sketches to put around this, but the reason it was a “novella” and not a “novel” – well, let’s just say I don’t really have a story to tell (yet).
It’d be action and dialogue, which is all fine and dandy, but I don’t think it’d enrich your life for having read it. I want the story to be far more interesting than a quick swagger along.
When I started writing my (recently finished draft) book, it was as a training exercise of sorts – to take me to the next book that I wanted to write. So, after fiddling about in Scrivener today with a bunch of ideas, I’ve decided to start the next book, and not just a palette cleanser. The working title is Upload, which tells you nothing at all except that I like short file names.
I don’t expect to finish it before the sabbatical is up, but that’s ok – I’ll have rowed up the river a bit at least. The current plan is to work on this for about two weeks; the first week will mostly be character sketches and settings, and then into the first few chapters. Then, I’ll go back and try and edit the last one and get that out the door.
Plans never survive contact with the enemy, of course, but it’s nice to have a plan anyway.
