The Workbench

Achilles had his armour.  Thor wielded the mighty Mjölnir, and Arthur held Excalibur.  Even Cupid packs heat, using a bow.

Me, I use something called Scrivener.  I love this tool – it’s kind of an all-in-one piece of software for, well, writing.  It’s probably not as manly as a sword, but it’s better for getting my job done.

There’s lots of tools out there – I hear John Scalzi uses Google Docs.  I’ve tried a few things.  Microsoft Word doesn’t work for me; it’s noisy, a tool designed to be many different things to too many people.  I have a soft spot for Ommwriter, which is just beautiful.  But for serious novel writing?  I keep going back to Scrivener.

The thing is that it’s not the tool, but how it’s used.  One kung fu isn’t stronger than another, and I fully expect a dedicated person could write an entire novel in Notepad (if they didn’t want to use italics; that’s what Wordpad’s for).

Scrivener’s been good to me this week:

Word goal: 2,500.  Word achievement: 3,500.
